So I have few friends in warm and friendly land of Argentina and they're (surprise surprise) really into bikes. Mati Kalwill is a regular at the Critical Mass over there. I've never been to Critical Mass in London and myself am in two minds about the whole idea but it looks like they're having a good fun having it and manage to piss off load of taxi drivers and buses which we all know is a good thing. oh and of course, manage to make the point and usually get a lot of cheering from passer bys (something that's definitely missing at any London based public action). Mati also runs great bike blog, check it. and is part of a bike collective Biciconga.
I am also very keen on their combination of CATS and BIKES - fuck yeah, match made in heaven!

Vanessa Bell, my friend from London that currently lives in BA posted a nice write up on her first experience with Masa Critica on her blog and it's a good read. I'm looking forward to more reports from her, watch her blog!

Red Bull Mini Drome came and went...

and left us all in awe over the skills of some (most of) 105 riders that took part. Respect for participating to all those that did, even bigger one for those that managed not to fall out of it and huge thumbs up to winners! One of them, taking second place, my friend Christian Vollmer from Germany, well done Chris, you made us all really proud!
The winner of the evening was Chris Akkrig and justly so, that man is a machine.

Some time in 90's few crusty punks in States decided to build a two frame tall bike and started an alternative bike counterculture. They named their gang The Black Label Bike Club and became the first "outlaw bicycle club" famous for street fights in bike jousting which were pretty hardcore. B. I. K. E. documentary explores this smelly and wasted counter culture of cycling with interviews of the originators and rise and fall of other gang members.

Eurobike 2010

It's been pretty quiet around here of late but I have pretty good excuse and reason that makes up for it. Last weekend I went on the road trip with guys from 5th Floor to visit Eurobike 2010 in Germany. We had quite a blast. It was mainly about bikes and beers, both in equal measure. Ok, maybe a little more about bikes, as Eurobike happens to be the largest bike trade exhibition. But beers was aplenty too.

Well worth it tho. Eurobike had really quite a lot to offer from bike innovations and new technologies, clothing to obscure stuff, like the Mondrian bike. I didn't really take much pictures on my film camera, as I know how shitty they would come out. But here's some stuff. Will upload some stuff from my blackberry camera later.

These young mountain bikers were literally killing it.

5th floor guys organized a lake ride and sprint competition that had a huge turn up and it was great fun. The lake Bodensee we arrived to is apparentely biggest in Europe and its fecking beautiful. The water was freezing cold but we braved it anyway.

This guy's bike dates back 1910's. He was pretty proud of it as he was parading it around. Germans you meet on a street like to talk a lot. Just take it as a precaution.

The title of this post is not quite accurate as you don't need to be a babe (or a female for that matter) to be harassed whilst on your bike. But it takes a wanker to harass people on the street. I take my bike everywhere I go, no matter what I'm wearing and gosh, do I have a numerous stories about people holling at me from the passenger seats or even stopping on red light to ask me how much would it be. For what, asshole, FOR WHAT?! is my usual loud answer to which they generally have nothing left to say. Street harassement, especially towards women, has finally become widely recognised and debated issue. Dawn Foster, female cyclist, sick of the unwanted attention has set up a blog 101 Wankers where she pins down places on the map where the incidents happened. My friend Julia and her friends have also started blog Hollaback London with motto "If you can't slap them, snap them!" where girls are encouraged to take photos of drivers and their registration plates and openly ridicule them on internet and calling up their companies (more often than not, the attackers would be van drivers) to complain. If you have a story to share, send it to Julia, I did too and it was very liberating experience.

While on the feminist note, there's an interesting article in Guardian online about the all-male British version of Tour de France - Tour of Britain - looking for a women cyclist to (wait for it) become their podium girls! Alas, it seems that the only way a female cyclist can make her way to this contest is to stand on the podium, looking pretty and kiss the winner. As the tour manager says: "Their role is not to stand there and look pretty by any means; they are there to coordinate the activity that goes on. They will be bringing our VIP dignitaries on the stage, handing the trophies to them to hand to the cyclists, they help the riders to put the presentation jerseys on." Now, that's something that requires a serious skills. What's most depressing is that some female riders go along with it like when Claire Pedrono, winner of Tour Britanny was given the honour of holding the chalkboard with the information on racer's times. Sad.

My good friend Kevin has sent me this link the other day as he saw this movie on a film festival in Switzerland. Unfortunately, my school level german is not sufficient enough to understand a word in this trailer, but it looks like an interesting movie. Hugo Koblet was rather tragic character who is believed to commit suicide at the age of 39 after a successful career both on and off the racing track (the off implies to his tour de force with women, more about him here. I'll try to get my hands on a DVD as soon as it's out and organize a film screening.

So it has finally come down on me too. Last week, my bike was stolen in Angel, area, apparently well known for bike thieves, as well as for its wealthy and uncaring residents (hence the thieves). As usually it came in the worst time when i have a lot of travelling and running around and these few days of taking tube and buses have almost brought me on to the verge of nervous breakdown. I am, however, excited to be getting new bike. Always something to be looking forward to with anticipation.

Midsummer Madness

For all bike insomniacs. On 21st of June, London Festival of Architecture 2010 is organizing a midnight ride through the city starting at 2am in Greenwich with coffee stop at Bar Italia in Soho and finishes with breakfast at 6am by Tate Modern. The route Grenwich - central - Primrose Hill and back to Thames bank provides a great architecture spotting opportunities made better by the absence of cars and tourists constantly getting in a way (as we all know it). With an early start and early a.m. finish it is certainly a challenge, I can't guarantee attendance as I didn't even make it to Tied Together (charity) midnight Sup magazine ride from Nike 1948, which was literally next to my house. Maybe it's to to give that lazy ass a little kick.

It is no novelty that fixed gear bikes are mega trend and everyone's been jumping on the fixed gear breakless bandwagon (imagine that in practice) for some time. In my opinion, that is all good as long as something interesting comes out of it. That is definitely the case of British accessories designer Harris Elliot that has presented his latest collection through a short film featuring some nice fixie stunts. We've seen it all, of course, but this one is particularly well done. No clues as of who the crew is, it's directed by Manny Bonnet.

His collection is really not bad, I especially fancy this jacket with different sizes quilt and attachable rucksack. For the full interview with designer, go to Dazed Digital.

First of all, you might have noticed new thing on the right hand side, yes the Gutter Bunny magazine dummy is done and available to download, consisting of about 20 something pages of music, interviews, bikes, etc. Make me happy, have a read and let me know if you liked it!

I've been recently approached by two american girls Sarah and Krista, that run project of art installations named Gutter Bunny Project. What a name, right? Anyway, they'll be showing their work across galleries in US and are looking for more footage of urban cyclists worldwide to go with their art installation. Hit me up with your bike videos!
They also liked the portraits I made for Gutter Bunny and suggested they could be part put up in the galleries and because I like them too and I like the people in them even more, I thought I would blast them on here again and in full grace. Steve from Moustachio’s Bikes runs his bicycle workshop in mighty Seven Sisters, north London. Still in it’s initial stages of maturity, it has already become a success by providing a number of unique services unavailable in the area. As well as providing people with a more understanding of bikes and riding, workshops like Moustachio’s Bikes could be used as meeting places for the community, to allow like minded people to join and plan a better cycling network for new and experienced cyclists alike.

All this new wave of cycling in London, people are really getting into it, do you think we’ll ever be as big on cycling as say, Amsterdam or Copehagen?
I hope so. Geographically London is ideal for cycling because it is flat and not so large that any journey should ever take over an hour. Cycling in London makes more sense than any other method of transport. It is good for the environment, peoples’ health, is far more affordable, improves peoples’ navigational skills, is refreshing, activating and creates an independence incomparable to the alternatives. The financial restrictions of the economy have forced people to seek alternative travelling means, and the recent surge in popularity of cycling has provided an easily obtainable solution
I don’t believe the jump to becoming a truly bike friendly capital is so great but it will require the combined efforts of all involved. For it to work successfully to the benefit of the riders, the progress should be in the hands of the riders, not the corporate chain stores, the government, or the councils. Cycling is a symbol of freedom and the idea of cyclists waiting for a better London to be created for them is going to be a long and painful path to take. I think the councils should put more effort into helping to create network of communal workshops that can be used by all to fix their bike problems, and also create more secure bike locking facilities. I particularly like that many squatting communities are now giving free bike maintenance tutorials free of charge as a way of giving back to the community that maintains their cost-free existence.
What are your favourite bikes, do you have any preferred type?
There is only one type of bike that I like and that is a bike that the rider is completely happy with, that functions safely and efficiently, and opens doors to independence and good times. A bike should be set up as a reflection of riding style and needs.
There is currently a surge in stock bikes to match the expanding variety of riding styles. This is great as it allows buyers a diversity of choice and hence more accessibility to previously custom-only setups. However, the flip side is that with this convenience comes the ease to just let someone else make decisions for you that affect your ride. Stock bikes can only ever provide a good starting base; only with time in the saddle will you find out which parts are more or less suitable as they wear out, break, restrict or cause discomfort. Spending lots on a stock bike with lots of really expensive parts is often counter productive when you realise all these parts are not suitable or do not fit.
Riding is a learning experience and taking it slowly is the best and most safe way to becoming a confident and accomplished rider. Learning what bike to ride is part of that learning experience. People like to jump on whatever bike is trendy at the moment, without knowing how to ride it properly first. It can be quite dangerous.
Do you have any rarities in your collection?
I believe I am one of the only BMXers in the world who still runs a 2-brake setup, a trials riding habit that has shaped my riding style irrevocably, so in that sense my BMX is pretty rare!
I also have an amazing tricycle that a friend found, which was probably homemade by some DIY fiend like myself, with an excess of welding tools and materials. It’s a tiny kid’s trike but it is so heavily over-engineered, it’s amazing. It is made of solid rectangular section iron bar, has no bearings, and you cannot lift it. Truly unique and near completely useless unless upgraded to become a locomotive train.
Building a community where cyclists help each other is really important and it seems like you could be playing an important role in this. What are your plans for the future?
There is never any one way to solve any large scale problem like a whole city of cyclists’ bikes requiring regular maintenance, but there is an option that is currently expanding in London that I believe will be better for the majority of commuters. Cyclists looking to buy or fix a bike will benefit from community based workshops because they will teach people to fix and maintain their own bikes and provide them with the means and support they need to do this indefinitely, becoming independent from the expense and the hassle associated with high street stores, specialist stores, and online parts buying and DIY home mechanics.
I really hope that this year will be a turning point in providing London with a better network of community based workshops so that eventually all Londoners have this option available to them, no matter where they are based.

Although still only in 6th grade, Sam has already managed to attract the attention of BMX community through creating striking sun drenched, California-feel photographs of his fellow BMX riders. One wouldn’t guess they were taken in London borough of Guildford. Sam can’t wait to get out of school and make living from behind his camera lenses. With a professional attitude he takes in his work, it seems that the sixth grade is holding one very talented young man from pursuing some serious career.

GB: Hey Sam, are you London born and raised?
SK: Well, pretty close. I’m from Guildford, which is in Surrey. It can be pretty boring there at times but I get by.
GB: What do you do in your free time? From looking at your pictures I can see you have a nice cycle park over there.
SK: Yeah, there’s an old beaten up skatepark about ten minutes ride from my house, which is pretty fun, We have a good little scene down there, but most of the times we travel to some of the other local parks like Horsham and Crawley. And apart from riding it’s just college work and taking photos.
GB: Sounds like good life to me, really.
SK: I try to have fun when I can.

GB: I remember when BMX was the only bike you would ever saw on the streeet, shame it’s now just a part of really small scene...
SK: Yeah, its dying otu a fair bit in some areas, like my local BMX scene has got a lot smaller the past two years I’ve really been involved in it but then, in some areas the scene is getting bigger...but overall, it’s definitely getting smaller.
GB: How did you get into BMX?
SK: I don’t even remember, to be honest. I used to ride MTB and do a bit of trails and street on it, then I moved house and ended up selling my MTB. Then when I turned 16 I got a proper BMX and used to just ride on my own. Then I went down the skatepark just to see what it was like and got talking to one of the riders who was my age down there and he saw I had a camera so I used to just go there and take photos, even thought they weren’t very good at the time. That kind of got me involved with the locals a bit more. Then I started going down there and became a local myself and started to progress with my riding and photography and here I am now. It’s strange how I got into both at the same time, but riding always gave me an excuse to get the camera out and vice versa.
GB: Have you tried both in the same time? That would be interesting!
SK: Not yet, haha. I did a bit of filming over the summer, which involved me riding and filming at the same time, even though I was only just rolling along the floor it was a bit daunting for fear of dropping the camera and I came close a couple of times!
GB: Thrilling. I looked at your portfolio, its kind of mixture of personal and sport photography, what is the direction you wanna take?
SK: I don’t really know, now I do a big mix of pretty much everything lifestyle. I’d love to still get a lot of my pictures published in the BMX magazines, but I can kind of see myself moving more towards fashion side of photography. Although the stuff in the studio can get a bit boring and samey, I love what you see in the magazines with the weird clothes and strange locations, that’s my kinda pictures!
GB: Well, most of the fashion photographers didn’t start shooting kids in the skate parks, so you have what is called “the competitive advantage”.
SK: Haha, I’d like to think so, BMX has taught me a lot about lightning and composition and such.
GB: So who are the photographers you look up to?
SK: There is far too many to name, to be honest, but the one I’ve always loved since I saw his work and the one that instantly comes to my mind is Brooks Reynolds. I love the sense of loneliness in his photos and I think my photos are starting to take that sort of direction too. His lighting is on point too.

Two friends travelling across Africa are looking at who rides bicycles, why they ride them, and if they love using bicycles as a primary method of transport. This is great project from two american folks travelling around states and taking portraits of people and their bikes. Simple, yet captivating. I appreciate they share my philosophy of not giving preference to any particular style of bikes, but giving space to any riders of any background or age. We're all in it together after all, non?

This is second part in my very slowly evolving series of bike film reviews. The one i've done so far is pretty shit but maybe still worth CHECKING OUT.
Right, I remember watching this film when I was a little kid. The main actress Iva Bittova, made it pretty big in the world of avant-garde music playing violin and screaming in high pitched voice. Anyway, this is really nice movie to watch when you hangover and feel like the sun shining through your window is annoyingly sending even more head spins to your already pretty damaged body and you're thinking that what you just said last night to the object of your desire was pretty embarrassing and he/she will definitely never look your way (it makes it easier when you confess this on blog) - well this is the best cure to get you back on track of naive assumption that world is great and love always wins after all.
Basically, this is a classic romeo and juliet story of young postman falling in love with girl from gypsy village (white + gypsy is in easter europe worse than Montague + Capulet) and although it ends on pretty realistic terms (they don't kill themselves but they split up anyway) its still a feel-good movie. Yep, that's it. They're riding nice bike together and that's the point of this all.
I'm really hangover.

Sustrans bike charity

Today I got my Free your bike info pack from Sustrans - the UK's leading sustainable transport charity. They're mainly about bikes. The basic information in the pack wouldn't be any good for anyone that cycles for a while but they packed me also 2 cycle maps, south-east england and London as well as little leaflet with information on some more great cycling maps, I shall definitely use these some time soon.

It was a shit 70's (or so) italian pseudo art house erotic movie. I judged by the cover and I judged wrong (as usually)
The pink bike was really worth more running time than it did.
And the scene when she's riding with her floral see-through skirt flopping gently in the wind, revealing her bum in girly white knickers - yeah, that got pretty boring after a minute. sorry. I do not recommend watching it, unless of course, you're a bloke. The first few minutes is a real bike porn.

This is my first review and I'm trying really hard.

This is like So last year information but I thought that I would still bring this to your attention in the case you didn't know. David Byrne, is not only talented multi-artist (i've always been suspicious of people that can do everything but maybe it's just plain jealousy) but also vivid cyclist. And he wrote a book about it, so go buy it should be good, but don't take my word for it.

Also, he designed a bicycle racks in New York. My kinda guy.
